In the early 1970s, women in Champaign-Urbana formed a feminist coalition called Champaign County Women Against Rape. The organization has seen many changes throughout the decades, but always maintained the core purpose of serving survivors of sexual assault. Rape Advocacy Counseling and Education Services was founded in 2009, the daughter of that original Rape Crisis Center.

If you have needs that RACES cannot assist with, call 2-1-1 to find other agencies or access their online database.
More information about 2-1-1 services is available from the United Way of Champaign County.
RACES serves Champaign, Ford, Piatt, and Douglas counties.
If you are not located in one of these counties, you can find your local rape crisis center on the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault website.
Confidentiality
Report
Rape crisis centers have a special kind of confidentiality in the State of Illinois: Absolute Privilege.
As a rape crisis center, RACES cannot share any information about the people to whom we provide service.
RACES provides for confidentiality for all victim services.
The victim and counselor/advocate have access to private space where services are provided.
Client records may only be reviewed by those permitted by law.
This always includes the client and may also include the client's parent/legal guardian, if applicable.
Bystander Intervention
Report
Disclaimer: It is never a Bystander's responsibility to prevent violence or harm from occurring.
It is always the perpetrators fault for causing the harm.
The only person responsible for a sexual assault is the perpetrator, but we can all take steps to prevent violence in our community.
This may seem scary and difficult, but there are small ways you can intervene to make a big difference!
You may even find that combining techniques can be effective as well-maybe you want to Delegate to a trusted authority figure, but also delay and check in with the person who was harmed.
